“The absurd irony of the stigmatized disorder of disease”

INTRODUCTION
The work is presented in the form of an installation, the basic concept of which is toregard the matter of "discrimination against the sick" as a new type of virus, so thatthe discriminator can experience the pain of the discriminated. The whole process isplaced in the context of job hunting, simulating the real plight of patients, and dividingthe different behaviours of "discrimination against the sick" into three stages: stigma-tisation, entertainment and romanticisation. The work hopes to call attention to thereal psychological plight of the sick and to reject the stigmatisation of the disease.

INSPIRATION Some people on the Internet use sick people as entertainment hotspots, insulting and ridiculing others by using certain diseases as pejoratives.

RESEARCH An extensive search for information revealed that people with real-life illnesses face problems of being treated as entertainment hotspots, discrimination, stigmatization and alienation, some of which are rooted in the popular stigmatization of illness. Stigmatization can lead to discrimination and violation of individual rights.

\INTERVIEW

In the interviews, it was found that people believed that the present predicament would seriously affect the patient's life. And the public can only stop this behavior if they empathize with the suffering.the suffering.

THIINKING:Disease trichotomy——“Stigma syndrome”
We subdivided disease stigmatization behavior into three types: basic stigmatization - disease entertainment - disease romanticization, from stigmatization to romanticization its harm to the patient is gradually increasing.

New infectious viruses!!!The stigmatization of diseases creates a plight for patients, with a spread and impact comparable to that of a plague virus. We have labeled it the “stigmatization syndrome”.

Therapeutic means - symptomatic treatment The root cause of the stigma syndrome is a lack of empathy and awareness, which is treated by experiencing the stigmatisation of the disease in the life of the patient. To gain a deeper understanding of the patient's current situation and to increase empathy through immersion.

A record of the patient's visit will be branded on the patient.
Patients will be attacked and bound by the stigmatising words of others.
Patients will be placed in the public eye as a tool for entertainment, subject to censure and criticism.
Patients will be exaggerated as artists and the severity of their condition will be ignored.

“Stigma Syndrome” Experiential Disease Installation

STEP:1 Confirmation of Illness
Everyone is required to complete a self-test form before applying for a job. Being tested for stigma syndrome will result in a ‘warning’ stamp.

Normal Detection Marker

Anomaly Detection Marker

When people learn that they have Stigma Syndrome and decide to treat it, they undergo facial recognition, entering their own information, and the patient's pathological values and facial features are recorded in a case database, providing the basic facial data for the artistic self-portrait that will be the final treatment output.

STEP:2 Pre-employment sickness clinic
In the ‘stigmatisation room’, the patient is first treated. He/she sits on an uncomfortable stool with limited hand movement and wears a VR device to participate in a shooting game. During the game, the patient is asked to shoot at adjectives to describe his/her condition, but the correct word is much harder to hit than the stigmatised word. After completing the explanation of their condition and obtaining initial treatment, patients can embark on their job search.

[Clinic Space Design]
Creating a dilapidated hospital scene for the virtual set design of the shooter, we forcefully bound the patients in the space to express the stigmatised plight of the patients. The dilapidated hospital scene represents the disease itself, which is heavily stigmatised.

[Company Selection]
Patients will choose the company they want to work for after their initial treatment. However, due to their medical history, most companies will reject patients who have suffered from ‘stigmatisation syndrome’.The patient will be accepted as an anchor by an entertainment broadcasting company, which is similar to the current situation of entertainment platforms using patients as a tool for eyeballs.

STEP:3 Live streaming big bang
We have created a magnificent live virtual stage with stigma syndrome patients as the performers on stage. Victims of stigma in everyday life - the physically disabled and mentally ill - will act as spectators controlling the actions of the performers, allowing the performers to deeply feel the bondage and discomfort of stigma.

[Interactive Experience]
The patient will be broadcasting live in the virtual world using the XR interactive device, but his behavior during the broadcast is restricted and he will be required to work in a harness that can be controlled from the broadcast booth.

[Virtual Live Streaming]
[Interactive icons]
We designed a set of actions that people with ‘stigma syndrome’ would do when they are sick, based on the behaviour of people who stigmatise patients in their lives, and designed the actions as icons for people to click on to guide the patient's actions.

[Interactive process]

People can connect to the offline interactive device through their cell phones, and through the click of the icon to ask the experiencer to do the corresponding action, when the perfect action is reached several times, it will jump to the final art output stage.

[Virtual Space]
In the virtual space, real-life patients with physical and mental illnesses will act as the audience of this absurd performance, watching every move of the “stigma syndrome” patients, so that the stigma syndrome patients can fully experience the discomfort of being stigmatized and entertained in real life.

STEP:4 Artificial art factory
The patient will be bound to the art production chair, wearing a head-mounted device controlled by motors and servos, the five senses will gradually be bound and a self-portrait will be generated by synthesizing the previously collected data, and people coming and going will be attracted by this beautiful portrait, thus ignoring the patient's true feelings of pain and treatment needs.

’

Overall experience

[Step:1 Confirmation of Illness ]
After the patient passes the self-examination through the scale, his/her information will be recorded through facial recognition, and the ‘stigma syndrome’ will become a stigma on the patient's body.

[Step:2 Pre-employment sickness clinic]
During the first treatment phase, patients will be physically restrained. They will be forced to label them with various stigmatised disease terms, which will make them feel uncomfortable with.

[Step:3 Live streaming big bang]
Patients live work with a difficult and uncomfortable feeling that their illness is being treated as an entertaining joke, manipulated and maligned by others, but they are powerless to fight back.

[Step:4 Artificial art factory]
The patient will feel the extreme inequality of the artwork exchanged from the body in the final artwork, and he or she will feel the severe consequences of the over-glorification of the disease.

VIDEO SHOWCASE
This video shows the whole process of diagnosis and treatment of “Stigma Syndrome”, in which the participants will feel the helplessness of real-life patients who are stigmatized in the treatment process.
